So I was feeling substantially less alert this morning than I did yesterday morning. A nap helped, but not really enough. Finally decided to drag out the big guns, being in this case naproxin, pseudo-ephedrine, and caffeine, in the form of a (relatively weak) cup of tea. Before I even drank the tea, I was suddenly feeling much more perky, and remarked on this.
K: Caffeine is absorbed through the skin! Maybe you've become so sensitive to it...
Me: You're right! I did indeed take the tea leaves out of the box with my bare hand!
K: Wouldn't it be great if all you had to do was finger the leaves?
Me: Perhaps I will make a salve, and carry it around in a little jar, and whenever I really need it, I will rub a little on the inside of my wrist.
K: ... That could be really effective.
Me: Um, yes, that was the point. *pauses* This is a bad idea*, but the process is sounding more and more interesting.
K: I've been wanting to do a caffeine extraction. *pause* Hm... no, really the way to do it would be to buy caffeine pills. Those would be reliably food safe, whereas many of the reagents used in the extracting might not be...
Me: Honestly, I was thinking of using much cruder methods, and not purifying the caffeine first. Be a bit easier to work out dosage that way.
K: Not necessarily...
(I will spare you all the debate about different modes of transmission and bioavailability of caffeine as absorbed through the digestive tract, which of course led to the discussion of espresso gargles and caffeine suppositories -- and honestly, if I never heard of such being used *in Seattle* you have to wonder -- but mostly because this debate was completely silly because neither of us bothered to look up the couple of facts that would have solved the issue. So, for entertainment value only.)
* I really don't need caffeine back in my life. I use it rarely and medicinally, and that's fine, and probably having caffeine salve with me wouldn't be a problem... except possibly right now. Nrgh.
