There is much to be said for the quiet splendor of the zendo lit only by a pair of flickering candles, both of us with extra layers against the chill, the customary hum of the city stilled, but for the rise and fall of a chainsaw, the restless but no longer punishing wind, the splatter of rain and the cheerful babble of water going out the basement drain.
