So last night we dropped by one of the parties -- the one down at Parkplace in Kirkland, as Parkplace has the distinction of being our nearest independant, and a pretty cool store to boot.

Last time 'round, [livejournal.com profile] dianthus and [livejournal.com profile] craigp both went out to dinner and then went and picked up a couple of copies at Bailey Coy. It was a nice party, parents and kids and non parents of all sorts, a lot of people in the bookstore, ran into a couple of old friends, had fun, etc. etc.

This time both Craig and I were pretty tired and not feeling that social, but we wanted to check it out, so we showed up at 11:45, planning to waltz in, buy a copy and slink off. It took us a little while to accept that the massive crowd of people in the courtyard in front of the bookstore (and crowding the bookstore and lining the sidewalk) was there for the release. Somehow I actually expected things to be smaller this time around. (And apparently so had the owners of the store.) I don't know what I had been thinking. Nonetheless, we stuck it out, and eventually got our books and fled.

And I still have to say that watching wee little eight year olds clutch a four inch book with such reverence is worth the pain. All this fuss for a book ;-)

As for the book... just finished it.

It wasn't the book I was expecting. Definately broke the mold in terms of plot. In some ways the storyline was less cohesive than in the previous books -- have to think about that. At least, as the action is moving out into the larger world instead of being strictly centered around the school, things are getting messier. There's a lot of tying up loose ends from the last book, and a lot of build up for the next two.

(As a complete side note, I had to really appreciate how well the writer of "Naked Quidditch" nailed some of the characters -- especially Ginny, Sirius, and Lupin. In the case of Ginny's character it almost seems precient. Character -- I'm not saying plot.)

Oh, and it's a coming of age book. Which maybe explains why it's a little messy. And it's not the most comfortable read, either. Up until this point, I had liked the fourth one best. I still do, but this one might well grow on me. Though it has a bit of that all middle thing going for it...

No, I'm not going to say who dies. It wasn't either of the ones I thought most likely, though, and it does suck.

I have some suspiscions about what will happen at the end of book six (or possibly the middle of book seven) and of course some parts of seven can be assumed. But really, no clue at all what will happen with most of book six.
