Sometimes I wonder if it's true that pretty much all I have to do anymore is feel reasonably physically decent, and my life just seems wonderful. Spent much of today, like yesterday, hiking, and I feel positively suffused with contentment. (Of course, being stuffed with tastey food from the sultan bakery doesn't hurt either.)
I did not write that yesterday, before we found the trailhead that we ended up following, we found what has to be the most majestic hollow tree I have yet to see. Dry and nice on the inside, hollowed apparently by fire, it seemed almost like a temple, with high arches wind-eyes, the most perfect little alcove on one side, and an amanita pantherina just hatched from the soft floor, dark gold cap with white patches. Sometimes there seems to be such a crazy abundance of riches...
Today six of us trekked along Tonga ridge. We only made it as far as the meadows, and spent a while hanging out there, listening to odd birds and checking out the flora. (It's blueberry season, if anyone has missed that. As usual, the smaller the berries, the better -- the dwarf scrub blueberries taste like essence of blueberry dipped in honey, while the others tended to just be good. And some were oddly garlic-y...)
My lungs did there recently typical freak out at the altitude -- I think I'm more likely to have asthma trouble (not that it was anything major) when there's any other inflamation in my body (this is clearly true with wushu)... But I think what I'd like to be doing, and what I'll be working towards is hiking with some pretty physically challenging sections... and also some sitting around and looking at stuff sections. Left to my own devices I sometimes get a bit relentless about the walking bit... I really want to get in a little bit of backpacking before the weather turns. I was hoping to work up to something halfway serious this summer, but the accident slowed things down a bit.
