(Okay, I didn't manage to post this when I was first writing it up....)

Gah. I just got a recorded phone call, from some actor I didn't recognize (though who is probably well known, I'm just dense that way) paid for by NARAL going on about how Bush will dismantle a women's right to choose.

NARAL should be aware that they are preaching to the choir. (Well, admittedly, the thrust of the message might be "get off your ass and vote"... but then, I've gotten off my ass and tabled for them, which is rather rarer... nad another story, actually.)

I really hate taped phone messages.

I don't like fear mongering. Even when I agree with most of the points being made. ("Almost certainly" strikes me as a bit much for anything with regard to the Supreme Court. "Almost certainly should the opportunity present itself, which is far from unlikely" is probably more like it, though I'll admit it doesn't have the rhetorical kick.)

There has got to be a better way...

Ack! Too much writing. Too much trying to compress large amounts of information into stupid arbitrary length requirements! I'm getting stoned on it...

We've all been hearing too much about important, but let's face it, often pretty minor ways in which things might or might not change in how our society is set up. Even at my most idealistic, I find it hard to see this as much better than a series of choices between appalling and... really mediocre.

So let's take a break and blue sky it. Screw these practical little baby steps, let's talk about the society we'd really like to be living in...

I, for example, would like to see access to information as a basic inalienable civil right.

I would like "family" to be a whole series of possible rights and obligations that can be agreed on (by both parties) to exist between any person... and any other person. Regardless of biological relationship (in most cases, it's practical, I'll grant, to usually assume a parent has obligations toward their child during their minority, though I think there should be a lot of flexibility in what makes a parent). Regardless of religious association.

I would like the whole idea of corporations being legal individuals to be abolished. Feh.

You?
