tylik: (demon)
Sometime in the last year K and I were having a discussion about the merits of green tea (and the demerits of caffeine) that turned into us each drinking a cup of green tea while doing calculus and eating breakfast each morning. Because many of the beneficial compounds in green tea aren't that soluble, this turned into grinding green tea into powder before preparing it. So we'd been talking about matcha for a bit.

Having declared that my source for organic matcha was too expensive, Kendrick of course had to find one that was almost as bad... but hey, organic green tea from the right region, prepared just the right way... So apparently we both have acquired a somewhat expensive new habit. A few weeks into this he acquired a proper bowl and whisk, where I am continuing with my beloved green mug and silver demon fork. (Yes, I know it is all wrong. It is right for me. For the moment, anyway.)

The fork, BTW, is kind of interesting. It's one of two I have, originally having belonged to my great-great grandmother... or something like that. I know generally what branch of the family it is from, and her initials are engraved on the back, so one day I will try to narrow it down more precisely.

Once I took one of them to a store that specialized in antique silverware, and after a few hours of sitting down with the owner and looking through her references, we were unable to come up with anything even vaguely like it. She couldn't even recognize the maker's mark, though she thought it might be Spanish. (Which would make sense - it's from the Spanish speaking settlers of California branch of the family.)

I've always wondered if there was a whole set of this pattern. Would all the demons be the same? Or would different pieces have their own? And who exactly gets fish-forks with bats on the handles, anyway?
