* Okay, Taijiquan question for yout then what are the alsient points of difference (other than lineage) between
the five main schools of taiji Chen, Yang, Sun, Wu, and Wu (Hao), and the CMC style?
I haven't seen enough of Sun or Wu/Hao to say anything, and not that much more of CMC Yang. Chen is all low open stances, lots of circling/spiraling, fa jing, and practical applications pretty much in your face. It's the Taiji least likely to be recognized as Taiji by a semi-informed observer. (I've had a number of people ask me what style of Kung Fu I was practicing, and been shocked to hear "Taiji".)
Yang (I'm thinking Yang family Yang) tends towards higher stances, fajing is often (usually?) not taught, it's much more linear, and streamlined - whereas Chen is ancient and huge, there's just a lot less Yang material, which makes it more accessible, I think. A lot of Yang teachers don't teach practical applications at all, but that's not the fault of the style, I think.
CMC Yang struck me as... kind of between the two. More changing direction, softer, rounder moves, generally. Generally more circular.
Wu... there's the wu tilt thing which weirds me out. And I know the same forms have slow and fast versions, but I haven't seen enough of that.
Beyond that? The Sun and Hao I've seen looked a lot like Yang to me - certainly as much as the Yang family and CMC Yang. But I really don't know much there.
* What thing (action, event, person, whatever) consistently brings you joy?
Weather. My martial arts practice. The people I practice with. Geeking with my roommate. Human biomechanics. Experimental design.
* What is the sound of one slug clapping?
Clapping what? Slap-sploosh!, mostly.
feonixrift -- How far do you think space travel will get... soon? ever?
I don't know if we'll get out of the solar system in a meaningful way. I guess I see more possibilities for research there than for colonization or the like. My biggest current worry is that getting out of our own well is currently so expensive and dirty. I expect to see people on Mars in my lifetime. But I don't know if it will be more than symbolic. (I hope so. But I want it done right, too.)
