Morning was pretty typical - except more math and chatting, because it was a holiday. I made apple bread, and then after some discussion about whether the Radio Shack might be open we headed in to the lab, where we spent an hour and a bit Skyping with the rest of the study group working through Knuth. A bit of data collection, a bit of slug feeding, and I headed home to put together my first real surface mount project.

Lesson: fixing the mini usb on my phone (the previous project) was probably one of the more difficult ways of getting my feet wet for surface mount, but a) my phone is all fixed and b) this project went really well. Okay, one embarrassingly crooked component, but still. Haven't played much more with the programming, though, because then I made dinner (a vegetable soup with quinoa and chick peas and pumpkin pudding - pudding because I decided more soldering was preferable to fussing with a pie crust). Oh, yeah, and sitting before dinner, and playing with KiCad after, and then falling on my face.

Yesterday I still didn't play around much with the programming on my new thingie, because after a similar trip to the lab (and a similar morning routine) it was full speed ahead on building our first circuit board. W00t! And then drilling holes into it with a hand drill (a non-powered hand drill) and mounting components... it's not that impressive, really, but a) it works and b) it's what I'm going to use to program the other thingie if I don't break down and solder on a bunch of pins. Which I might, but really, this board with the pogo pins is a more elegant solution. Some time last night before I went to sleep I mentioned to K I was intending to sleep in... and I did, until five. It's seven, and he's not up yet. I am amused... (he got the pogo pins all in place after I went to bed, though. I called it a night after getting the vias working...)

I am pretty thankful for my life, right now. Math and martial arts and research and electronics, and sitting and sparring and being late to lab because we spent too long talking philosophy, and new undergrad assistants and spinning yarn during department seminars. The farmer's market. The Chen class. And I'm kind of amazed and thankful that I have such good company in this all.
