Oh, and the wushu report...

Yesterday was mixed. I'd hit my head kind of hard before class (it was really stupid, I don't want to talk about it) and felt a little headachey and a little sick to my stomach throughout. Not very much... but enough so that when we were doing stuff with a lot of spinning, things just wouldn't stop spinning, and my stomach would do little dances. And Craig said helpful and comforting things like "Even relatively minor blows to the head can be very significant." Thank you mister sunshine!

OTOH, I jumped, and my back didn't mind. Problems with balance are not an asset when jumping, but still, that was cool.

Today, however, was the first really good class I've had in a bit. I jumped, I ran, I swept (I even did back sweeps -- sucky back sweeps I'll grant you, but I got all the way around, and they're the first one's I've gotten to work since I took the long vacation from sweeping. My front sweeps are approaching solid, though if I get all the way around I'm still likely to knock myself off balance. But... I feel like I have traction. I'm going to nail those suckers.)

And I did cartwheels! Whee! I keep meaning to practice cartwheels when there's no one around to see me, because I've never been able to do them well (even when I took gymnastics for a couple of years) and don't want an audience. But a bit ago I decided that this just wasn't working, and that when my shoulder wasn't fried, I should just make myself do them. And I have, once or twice, though they sucked really bad.

I think the butterfly jumps have gotten me used to the feel of turning like that, or being upside down or something. Because except for a few that I made myself do some weeks ago as kind of a penance, I really haven't been practicing. And today... I just did them. Hands down there, kick the feet up high, keep the legs straight, and then over. Shifu looked over and said, in shock, I suspect, because I don't think she's ever seen me do them before "Catherine! That's really good!" So I tried two in a row, to which she responded "Back leg straight!" (oops!)

They aren't perfect, surely, but I swear, I spent the rest of the class practically dancing around and feeling like a twelve year old. I did continuous runs of front rolls down the length of the carpet. And tried those scary looking straight bodied turn back over the shoulder things (which apparently we aren't doing yet, but this was not clear). I even enjoyed the plymetric sit ups. (The full double slap ones that I still don't have decent speed on, so that's saying something.) And then after class I got back out on the carpet and turned cartwheels until my shoulder (I'd originally avoided turning cartwheels because of the torn muscle in my shoulder) decided enough was enough and collapsed out from under me. (Which sounds bad, but actually was no big deal. It didn't hurt, it just kind of crumpled, and... well, I wouldn't have survived this far if I had any serious problems with falling.)
