Feb. 18th, 2005 01:40 pmHah. One more Chinese test down, and then a three day weekend to boot!
I'm feeling a little conflicted about the classical. It's been really
taking a lot of time, and I don't have much of that. At the moment, if I
want to really do it right, I need to spend about four hours preparing for
each class. It's only three classes a week, but... OTOH, copying
everything down by hand and drilling on the characters is paying off.
And I'm finally getting back to being able pick up characters after
writing them a couple of times -- which is paying off for writing in
modern, too. (No, I'm not taking modern, but I'm taking most of my
knowledge rep notes in modern, when I can, and my vocabulary is getting a
lot better. Though I'm switching back and forth between jianti and fanti
in a really lame sort of way.)
It just feels so good to know that after all the years I invested in the
language I didn't completely loose it. It *almost* -- not quite, but
almost -- makes me want to go on and do something further with it. If I
could just give up on sleep!
Next quarter... After all my complaining about taking the Modern Chinese
Martial Arts Movie class, they just announced an advanced readings in
modern chinese class. I spent several hours in a state of great conflict,
because really, the last thing I need is to be trying to make my way
through two translation intensive courses at the same time. But... darn
it, I think my modern is up to it, now. And it would be so satisfying...!
I mentioned this to one of my classmates, and she pointed out the obvious
fact which I had missed: the new class conflicts with Classical, so it's
really either one or the other. I'm still tempted, and I could take the
modern readins class and the martial arts film class, but... I don't
think I can give up on classical.
Oh well. Off to rebuild my dev box. If I disapper for long periods of
time, it might be because it's going badly.
