One the way back, I was listening to an NPR segment on the culture wars, that focused on Washington State. One of the speakers, an Evangelical Christian who had been raised Democratic but has become more republican over the years was talking. It was interesting -- he thought the Republicans were too much the party of big business, which kept them from doing the right thing on economical issues and issues of the environment. However, this seemed to be trumped, as I understood it, by frustration with the Democrats' inability of "recognise evil", and "social issues". And there was a lot about how he believed in American exceptionalism, and how we're better and more righteous than anyone else, and a shining example to the rest of the world.
There's this whole world view there... I can vaguely see the contours, but I really have trouble getting it. I think I almost understand it best in fiction -- the lonely group of people with on the Side of the Right against the rest of the world (most of whom are unwitting dupes, or whatever) being a fairly established motif, but...
