Notes from my commute:
Oct. 10th, 2005 08:02 pmRain dance --
Dawn over water
Clear sky graced with whispy clouds
I won't need a coat.
Speed is your friend.
Speed smooths over the tough spots.
Speed is always your friend --
it's just that sudden stop at the end...
My early morning meeting at MS was cancelled, so I am having a quiet evening at home. My body is still insisting that I need some down time -- maybe if I pay attention, it will stop? Soup, and fresh bread... I also just finished reading a delightful piece of fluff fiction...
So this book reads rather like a reverse gender regency romance. Of course, I said the same thing about "Heart of Gold". And there are some similarities, but while this isn't as beautiful drawn, or as well plotted, as Heart of Gold, it is light and funny. I thought it was hysterically funny, actually, in how the gender roles were handled, and most gender reversal tales strike me as pretty dumb. While this wasn't exactly great literature, seeing the young boy playing a role more often filled by a Georgette Heyer heroine was entertaining.
Oh, but his kind heart and good character. Oh, but how he has an unusual background, which means he reads, writes, and rides, like a girl -- and can even shoot a (dainty) pistol! Oh, but how he is almost seduced, but refuses to be ruined, however fast his heart beats. Oh, but how he trembles at his own audacity even as he is courageous and (a little) unconventional, and wins the love of the princesses. (The poly aspect was amusing, though mostly silly, even for this book.) Oh, but how good he is with the children, knowing how to raise them kindly, but with a firm hand! And the clothes! The descriptions of how he is decked out in finery to display his young loveliness just about had me in hysterics. (His bare arms! The daring neckline that displayed his chest! His long hair, braided with ribbons! The cute dykey soldier girls weren't bad either.)
For all of that, I don't think it's written as a comedy...
