Not to go into the details (ooh! datacubes! proteins! molecular dynamics!) but at the moment we're noticing how even our current raw data is getting ahead of the space on the box. We're doing okay on the cube side, but we really need a moderately accessible repository for backed up data. Ideally ten terrabytes or so, and it can be slow, but it would be nice if it could be accessed without a lot of intervention.
A. found this: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10396259&adid=17070&dcaid=17070 which looked like a reasonable starting place, and got us thinking about variations on the concept. This could do, but we'd prefer 5-10 times the size, ideally at 3-5 times the cost. When I found myself saying "well, if we got a bunch of cheap drives, and one of those cheap single card systems" it occurred to us that perhaps we needed to know more about what was already on the market.
Recommendations?
