Apr. 25th, 2006 07:01 pmI believe I just swabbed the deck.
In truth, not all of the deck, or even all the deck wot needed swabbed, but I finished weeding all the various large containers, planting a number of herbs and a fig tree in the now unoccupied spaces, dealt with all the unsightly plastic pots, arranged the herb-filled pots in attractive groupings out of the walkway, moved the bench into a more usable position, and scrubged down the worst of the dirt on the deck. I guess this doesn't sound particularly piratical, but I am thinking of asking someone to snap a shot of me on the boat, perhaps in a Grace O'Malley get up, holding my dao. It would make a great icon. Arrr!
I spent most of the day trying to get the internet connection up and running, over the objections of Qwest. Short version: they agreed the connection was hosed, and promised someone would be out in two hours. Three hours later, they said the next day. Despite my philosophical objections to the practice, I decided that this would be an opportune time to throw a fit, and so I threw one. (Politely.) After a bit of esclation from one manager to another, and assurances that there was nothing they could do, they got a tech out in about another hour, and the problem was diagnosed and at least partially dealt with. It is sadly reminiscent of working at MS, in that I feel I am being conditioned to throw fits more often.
Meanwhile, I engaged in what passes for gardening on a houseboat, general spring cleaning, and cooking. Bread is rising, beans are soaking for minestrone, and I will be making caponata. All terribly domestic, which is just about perfect when I need to think through a few things. And there is some kind of affirmation of some continuity in my identity, however attenuated it may be. I planted my first herb garden when I was eight...
