(BTW, I've been behind on LJ for a bit now, and am trying to get caught up. I'm also behind on email, and a bunch of other stuff. If it's urgent, drop me a note at my UW address.)

Saturday I went to see [livejournal.com profile] stolen_tea's belt test at Quantum martial arts. Much fun and an assortment of bruises and minor contusions were had... but more than anything else I was just really impressed by the school. It has that mix of people being very focused and serious with a very warm and supportive environment that is really what I look for in a martial arts school. In addition, it's not only generally queer friendly, but very specifically trans friendly, a point which I wanted to call to the attention of all of my gender queer friends.

Anyhow, [livejournal.com profile] stolen_tea did great, and it was a lot of fun to see him in that setting, and see other people who have obviously been taught in the same style. (It's different enough from most of what I do that I spent quite a while looking at people doing things that were obviously being done correctly... and just looked wrong to me. And then I'd realize "Oh, they're double weighted. Huh. I guess that must be okay here." Some of the stances reminded me a bit of my early training in Hayashi-ha Shito-ryu, but even so it just looked *weird* to me. Might be worth questioning those assumptions...)

The school has a pretty strong emphasis on the practical, and involves a lot of sparring. Between liking the people, being intrigued by the style, and that the school is going to soon be relocating to a space basically right on my ride home from the U, I think I'm going to try a few classes, and possibly cross train there, at least for the summer. I'm a little worried about going barefoot. I usually train in orthodics. I don't like the idea of being dependent on orthodics, and I do try to worth barefoot and do what I can to improve my foot alignment (which has gotten a lot better over the past six years or so). However, I also would kind of like to avoid going through knee surgery again, and my feet are still somewhat fucked up. Anyhow, the school does have a really nifty practice surface, so I'm going to give the barefoot thing a try.

My primary school affiliation is still with CWTA, and that's not going to change any time soon ;-) but we're on a reduced schedule over the summer, so I'm really not going to be getting the kind of hours in I like anyway. And I've been aware for a while that I was going to have to go outside of the school to get some of the training that I need. And I feel like this school might be nicely complemtary to my other training on a number of levels. I'll be talking with Shifu before I finalize anything, of course.
