So I generally do not collect edible mushrooms in Cleveland, even though there are many quite nifty ones and I've been dragging bits and pieces home (which sometimes means "to the lab") with me for IDing purposes. Hey, there are a lot of mushrooms here that we just don't get in WA. The polypores are particularly terrific. And we have 'scopes at both labs, so even some of the LBMs are terribly interesting. Some days I think inocybes are my favorites.

Ahem. Anyhow, I do make exceptions to the edibility bit, when it's on land that I know the history and current gardeners' practices of and... oh, hell, when I go down to find a whole bunch of pristine Coprinus comates clustered near where I usually practice. I may not be a theist, but ignoring that would offend the mushrooms gods, and you *don't* offend the mushroom gods.

Clearly I need to sit down and figure out some interesting hiking places I can take my nifty but terribly conspicuous bicycle to and go hunting there as well. And maybe collect a bag full of white acorns while I'm at it.

Also: after stuffing my jacket with mushrooms, I brought them upstairs to clean and saute them in a bit of oil (as I want to cook them later, but I don't want them to auto-digest in the meantime). I had been sad that I hadn't found worms for the planaria, as the worm bin has had problems, and we're not using those worms for feed until the population is restored. Anyhow, opened up a mushroom, and there were a number of worms. "Oh cool!" say I. "Look, worms!" "Those need to be frozen!" agrees Kendrick. (The planaria already having been fed today.)
