From [livejournal.com profile] jaunthie, a list of writing cliches, and from me, commentary on how I've transgressed. Except I think these are more fan fic cliches... or at least, some of them I don't understand, and others make more sense in that context.

Genderswap: I don't think so. Most of my characters don't fit well into gender stereotypes, and many of them would probably find a gender swap interesting but not very important other than the "what the heck happened?!" aspect.

Bodyswap: No. My next thought is "and I would obsess about biomechanics... and motor synergies and, and, and..." I'd *really* have to think about it, because mind and body just aren't particularly discrete from eachother, and anything even vaguely realistic would be much more traumatic than anything I've read.

Huh. That could be fun. Except that I'd likely get bogged down in the details. (Kind of the way I keep not writing a particular alternate history because even when I do have time I get bogged down in the epidemiology.)

Drunk!fic: Is this a fan fic thing? I don't think se...

Huddling together for warmth: I'm not thinking of one right off, but ya figure I must have.

Undercover in a gay bar: No...

Pretending to be married: In fiction? I've done this in real life, I think. By implication, anyway.

Secretly a virgin: Um, once again, in real life.

Amnesia: No.

Cross-dressing: Darn, I don't think so. Again, in real life...

Forced to share a bed: I likely haven't. Romance hasn't generally been a big focus for me. And when it has (I'm thinking Evie and Mona and Paul, for instance) the whole kind of accidentally getting involved wasn't a big thing of mine. I have a strong aesthetic preference for people who make actual choices they actually take responsibility for.

Aliens make them do it: Not aliens, and it's probably a more ambiguous situation than forcing something. People being deluded into doing what they do by things they do? Heck, I think this is real life, too.

Wingfic: Er?

Mpreg: Er?

Mistakenly assumed to be gay: Mistakenly assumed to be straight, probably. But that's almost beyond cliche.

Let's play truth or dare: Nope. This is a fan fic list, i't it?

Mary Sue fic: Guilty as charged.

Aphrodisiacs: Mm, not as such.

Curtainfic: Er(3)?

Hurt/Comfort: Certainly. Though I think I've often been more interested in writing things from the standpoint of the person doing the hurting.

Apocalypse fic: Oh yeah, good child of the eighties. (Well, post-apocalypse fic, anyway.)

Someone has a baby: Well, as a background thing. Like, Analeet spends a bunch more time with her father because her mother is pregnant at one point. (Which is important both in terms of her martial training and her rather divided caste identity.)

Baby!fic: This has got to be another fan fic thing. Look, I'm pretty sure I haven't written fan fic per se. (Okay, I wrote a few pieces for a Doctor Who / Star Trek crossover universe when I was thirteen, but even they were all original characters.) This isn't a value judgement, it's more of a motivation thing. I don't have a lot of time. I haven't yet been so enraptured with other peoples characters that there were stories that had to get written, and if it doesn't have that level of urgency, it doesn't happen. I never even managed to have the intestinal fortitude to write the Vanyel/Lestat bit, and that would have been kind of worth it not because it had any inherent redeeming value (part of the point was the complete lack of merit of the idea, and of course that this is when Lackey was threatening to sue anyone who used her characters and I was pretty sure I could distribute it broadly in an untraceable manner) but because it would have pissed off a bunch of people (who for the most part I would have enjoyed pissing off) and amused me.

Telepathic soulbonding: So very, very guilty. I wrote a lot when I was quite young. And much of the evidence has been destroyed.

Werewolves mate for life: Nope. I haven't written about vampires, either. Though I have been kicking around a story about a teenage girl who gets attacked by a vampire, and wakes up in an academic lab. But as little time for writing as I have right now...

PWP: Is this Porn Without Plot? Huh. Let's see... I wrote one piece of fairly graphic sex fic thinking that I could try to work out what erotica that I'd like to read would be like... except that it turns out that my own personal idea of graphic sex fic is awfully cerebral and, um... no, actually *no one* needs to read that. (It's not shame, it's just that it's hardly sex.) I am not great at writing sex, and mostly what makes it interesting to me are the relationships between the characters, which tends to bias things towards plot.

In other news, I'm suspecting I've had a low grade sinus infection for the last couple of months. Sometimes I'm amazed that no one has revoked my license to have a body...
