Jun. 10th, 2011 06:34 pmSo - bike! My bike is happy, which is generally pretty cheering. (I need to make a bike icon one of these days... I've been saying that almost as long as I've been on LJ. Ha. Okay, I did. It's not actually my bike, but it's the same make, model, color, and even has the same headlight. Good enough.) Really glad to have gotten that shifter issue dealt with. Finally. Got my old bike shoes and new clipless pedals on good terms. Might monkey with the tension a little more... but mostly I think I just need to get used to think again. Had to re-learn how to click in. I'm past having to think "twist out" after about twelve miles today, but I need to build new reflexes. (Yes, new reflexes. I never did put the clipless pedals on the recumbent.)
So of course I was all "now I'm really going to slam those hills!" See, I've known pretty much since I got this recumbent that it has pretty darned good geometry, and will suck less than most recumbents on hills... if I have some kind of toe clips or other such thing. And then I haven't. Even though I always had them on my last bike. (Partly this is because the last several years I've mostly being doing all these lame short ass commutes, and not particularly long stretches like I used to.) So I pretty much rode up every hill worth mentioning I could think of*, and yeah, this changes everything.
A change I will be able to take much better advantage of once my calves get used to it. Oh - and it turns out that now that I don't wear orthodics, my bike shoes are way too big. Too long, and I have to cinch them to the point where the velcro straps are extending past the side of the shoe. So I may well be replacing them in the medium near future. Might see if my current ones fit Kendrick, as he's been wanting to try the clipless pedals and that takes a major bite out of the cost of entry.
So. I fed the slugs. Took a bunch of old clothes to Goodwill. Acquired the most awesome jacket ever from Goodwill. OMG, I love it. And another jacket, which I would fawn over more in other contexts. (Looking for ways to dress up my wardrobe that won't annoy me.) Had a really good vegan(!!!) Hungarian lunch. (OMG, the chestnut puree!) Stopped by the social security administration office to request a new SS card. Went to garden shop to get a big pot for my poor three year old eggplant. And now home.
And now I've been on the computer far too long. Feh.
* Which isn't quite to say "both of them" - but I rode them again for good measure. Ahem.
