This is the XKCD cartoon of my day.
Okay, it's a little more involved than that. Today, rather like yesterday, got off to a slow start. There was some back fruckage involved, there was also about ten hours of sleep each night - far more than I usually need. So, something's up. Think I'm mostly past it.
L is currently off visiting her daughter, so I'm catsitting. Diana, the cat, seems to be fine with this and accepts me as a substitute source of food and pettin's - we'll see if she is all traumatised and sad when Laura shows up. She's certainly showing no such sign at the moment. However, she's been having trouble with a touchy tummy, so we've been trying her on alternative cat foods. I just picked up another possibility from Whole Foods. So far Diana seems to be of the opinion that it is food for the cat. I see this as a good sign. (Yes, I am allergic to cats. But not horribly. She's not allowed in my room, and past the first night of Laura's absence, isn't even trying to body-slam her way in.) I wander through the house speaking out loud a lot more if there is a cat involved. Is it cat food? Is it food for th cat? Do you need love? Okay, in truth, I'm not that much more dignified speaking to the slugs, and Diana and I are both not only vertebrates, but mammals! Practically sisters. Also, she is black and I have a great fondness for black kitties. (Which is good because I am also catsitting two black cats who belong to a labmate and his new wife.)
K is also off at sesshin (I am sad not to be going this summer - but with the spine stuff it would have just been too much time away) as is S who runs the local Zen group, so there goes most of the rest of my sources of local adult conversation. This also means that I have a whole CSA share to myself, and most of my back up folks on whom to dispose of excess vegetables are also not around. I am going to eat all the vegetables! Myself! Yes! This is daunting (remember, a share is meant to feed a family of four or five) but I think doable. Lunch was a giant pile of yellow beans with sesame oil, tamari and sambal oelek. Dinner is steamed new potatoes served cold under a pile of onion and cucumber that have been marinated in rice vinegar and cherry tomatoes in four colors. Honestly, one can really eat a lot of vegetables if one puts one's mind to it. (No, I don't usually eat potatoes - I'll often even forget it they come with the CSA - but I'm trying to rise to the challenge.)
Oh, hey - Diana, who was allowed seconds after a suitable wait to make sure her tummy didn't object, is now begging for thirds. I think the new food is a hit. I hope L doesn't hate me for it... (Oh, poor, sad, starving cat. I'll give her thirds in another few minutes, if she still seems hungry. She could use the extra calories, really.)
I have also...
* Spent hours on the phone with
* Biked to the lab and fed the slugs.
* Had some lemon gelato in a cone. Mm-mm. (It had been five hours since I'd eaten those beans, and I had miles of biking ahead of me.)
* Let a bunch of kids pretend to ride my bike. (Ah, the 'bent bike fan club.)
* Obtained a replacement purse wall to usb charger, a bluetooth headset (if I'm actually going to use my phone to talk to people, I really need a better headset) and the contact information for the saleman's wife who does some kind of obscure biomechanical physiotherapy (he figured we'd get on).
* Discussed figs, raw food, raw cereal and food bars with various Whole Foods Employees.
* Obtained a lot of groceries.
* Packed said-same groceries (about sixty pounds worth) on my bike. (Not my heaviest load ever - I was only shopping for me - and not any thing close to a packing problem.
* Road home, put away groceries, fed everyone.
I'd kind of like to do some forms, but it's already way late for sitting. So I will sit. And then I will faceplant. Or at least try to sleep in this heat - though really? It's like 28 C, which used to feel horrible, but currently isn't feeling that bad at all. (It was 33 earlier.)
Also, our WF has stopped carrying AlterEco Chocolate. This is tragic. I suspect the occasional chocolate buying consortium is about to become a great deal more active. (S has been bugging me about ordering more Grenada anyway.)
