Jun. 3rd, 2003 07:38 pmAll of the peppers and eggplants are in. (And looking pretty pleased about it as well.) I'm pretty happy with the layout -- pretty, I think it will be accessible enough (hard to tell before things have grown) and I've put up the tomato supports so as too make it hard for the deer to get at my grape vine (which is very happy, and I desperately hope will not be munched) and have encircled all the tomatoes (which the deer only like when they're ripe) with peppers (that they don't like at all).
I also put in more fennel (I love fennel -- this is the bulbing kind, which I grow as a vegetable) celery, spinach, beets and lettuce in the back garden.
This leaves me with two artichockes that I want to plant in the warm weather "herb" garden, some varigated lemon balm, some dubious chard, and some edible chrysanthemums which I've been waffling on (I think I'll put them in the flower bed above the formal herb garden, which seems to be acquiring edible flowers. Though I'll be growing these mostly for their greens...)
And I need to clear out room in the back garden for the fillet beans... and maybe kentucky wonder snaps or something like that. Or more runner beans. (Note to self: beans are productive, don't go crazy.) And I'm thinking that maybe I'll take advantage of the part of the one raised bed that's overly cool and shady and see if it's up to growing peas over the summer. Worth a shot, anyway.
I also need to do up a bunch of basil starts (should have started them earlier, I'm lame) more spinach, more lettuce, some okra (which I should've done earlier, but we only just picked some seed up) and maybe some brocolli, if I decide I have the right spot for it. (This is *summer* brocolli, see, completely different from fall brocolli which will get started in a month or two. Again, I'm working on taking advantage of my relatively cool back garden.)
I also absolutely must get two more rain barrels. In the next week, if possible. And I need to put out new slug traps, and put fresh beer in the old ones. Though the drier weather is helping with slugs, anyway.
Whew.
