Jun. 12th, 2003 04:17 pmLast weekend or thereabout I picked up some more seeds, including okra. I figured it was probably too late to start okay and actually get anything, but I've been wanting to grow it for years and I figured this way I'd at least get some experience with the plant, which would do me in good stead in other years.
I'm aware that to many okra has a rather slimey reputation, but I adore okra, and don't usually get enough of it. Years ago, before I ever knowingly ate okra, I had this dream where I was growing these mysterious plants for their seed pods, funny pointy looking things full of pearl like seeds. It was one of those resonant dreams that stuck with me, so it was quite clear in my memory the first time I saw a picture of okra plants in a seed catalog. (I'd even seen okra betweentimes, but I didn't associate the limp little pods with the plants in my dream.)
So I had to try okra, and it turns out I have a taste for the stuff. I get cravings for it. And it's hard to get good okra locally, though it does show up in season at the farmers' market.
Anyhow, Sunday evening I planted trays of okra, basil, lettuce, spinach and brocolli (no, it's not really the "right" season for brocolli, but at worst it won't make it, and at best we'll end up overrun with brocolli. I'll take my chances.) My regular seed starting set up involves shelves in the garage equipped with lights and a propogation mat for the heat lovers. I knew the basil and lettuce would be up in days, but the packet said the okra would take 14-21 days to germinate. Which made it sound even less likely that I'd see any this year.
Uh, call it two days instead. Every seed has sprouted. Heck, even the spinach and brocolli are coming up in record time.
