tylikYesterday Nikko brought in a mouse. In the fashion of her grandson, she drop him on the floor, then idly chased him around, stopping at one point to carrying him to the center of the living room. As I was casting about for an appropriate mouse trapping device (like, say, a large tupperware container -- I spend a lot of time catching and releasing mice) the mouse ducked behind a large bookcase. Nikko stood guard. I decided I'd try again later. Later I found no trace of the mouse.
This morning, after my bath I heard strange noises from the far side of the bed. I wondered aloud if Ari had gotten into the bedroom, and Craig said he'd been wondering the same thing. On investigation, however, Ari was not in evidence. And then there was a mouse, climbing up my bathrobe (which I was not wearing -- it was hanging on its hook next to the bed). I spent a while trying to trap the mouse, to no avail. I considered letting Ari into the bedroom, but decided to go for more humane solutions for the time being.
(I might add that the master bedroom is very far away from the living room, and I'm not sure how a mouse could have traversed that area, cat patrolled as it is. It could, of course, be another mouse, but since mice almost always come in through the living room cat door -- usually with a car -- that doesn't really resolve the problem. It was definately the same kind of mouse.)
A couple hours later, the mouse is discovered dead, apparently drowned, in the master bathroom toilet. (It occurs to me that any mouse who manages to fall into a toilet is probably unlikely to emerge alive unless someone aids them in a hurry. Not a mouse friendly environment.) After a brief ceremony, the mouse was flushed.
I am both saddened and more than a little squicked. I don't know why having a mouse drowned in my toilet bothers me so much more than having one killed by my cats, but there you are.
