Jul. 26th, 2003 11:02 amIf you like food -- and better yet if you like cooking -- now is a really good time to visit your local farmer's market.
Last week I went down to the Redmond market with Craig, but by the time we got there the seller who'd promised me he'd have okra and eggplants in had sold out. So today I was there right when it opened, buying corn, tomatoes, squash, okra, eggplants (both american eggplants and japanese eggplants), carrots, lettuce, melon, brocolli and candied pecans. And strawberries -- it's mostly the end of the commercial strawberry season, and I only found them in really large baskets. I was just about to resign myself to desperate overconsumption when the man next to me expressed a similar complaint, and I suggested splitting the basket.
I think I'm just going to get into the habit of getting there at open -- the crowd in general is much more serious about food, it's still cool, and everything is at its freshest.
