May. 25th, 2009 10:21 amWhat a wonderful self indulgent morning.
Despite being distracted and not getting enough math done (I get to do more math later - maybe calc AND stats AND nonlinear dynamics if I feel perky enough) I made decent progress (and ate my breakfast and drank my tea - which is sometimes hard to remember to do, even when they're right in front of me) and went out for forms. The chinese couple has been coming out mostly one at a time recently - I think (hope) that there are childcare constraints, as they're living their with their children and grandchildren. (At least, that's my current understanding, and I should ask more questions. It's likely that their daughter is doing her residency, but I'm really not sure. There's a lot of terminology I don't have, and I need to post to some of the chinese language communities for pointers to resources.)
So the man came out first, and we did the Yang 24 (and I may find that kind of a boring form, but all the practice really is making a difference). He mentioned that it was a holiday, and I agreed, but explained that I'd be working anyway. I need to figure out how to explain what kind of work I do. So far they mostly get that I'm the kind of student that doesn't get any vacations, even though I don't have classes anymore. Which, admittedly, is maybe the important part. Then when we were going to do the Yang Jian he realized that his "sword" (which is a telescoping rod, kind of like an antenna) was not in his bag. So I suggested that he use my jian, and I'll use my dao. (And it turns out that the form translates better than I would have expected. I mean, I'm sure I've done it with a dao before, but I was probably teaching it at the time and not thinking about applications quite as much.) So that was fun, and he was quite impressed with the sword, and asked where it came from. Of course, this is a sword with a story, so I had to explain its history. (By the way, thank you you guys again. I adore that sword, for both practical and sentimental reasons.) We chat back and forth a fair bit, but that was probably the most involved thing I've explained for a while, and it was easy. So, language win. Tomorrow I'll bring out my other jian as well, so we'll be well supplied.
And then I did laojia yilu, and laojia erlu. And Chen dao, and blue, red and green dragon forms. And my new dao form. And by that time the man headed in, and a bit later the woman came out, so I did the Yang 24 with her as well. I have *got* to get my driver's license worked the rest of the way out, because I want to invite them to come to the farmers market with me.
And then back in and some yoga. I'm finally feeling like I'm not driving around with my parking break on so much. (Though decongestants still help.) I mean, I've been better, just... everything was a little harder than it should be. I mostly had been working on just getting through my morning practice. There have been some small wins - now uttanasana with my palms flat on the floor is kind of my baseline (at least by the time I've done sun salutations twice.) But I'm starting to push my own limits more again, which is always a lot more fun. Though today I finished things up and did shivasana when Kendrick was in the room and I could not get my eyes to stay relaxed. I knew it would be difficult - it's fine when we're both doing yoga, but otherwise having people around is kind of challenging. Not something I want to do every day, but probably good practice.
