May. 27th, 2009 08:43 amOkay, that was surreal.
Wonderful day for training. (Er... another hour and a half of forms, and I guess other than a couple of things I consider necessary routine maintenance I'm doing Yoga this evening. Or maybe this afternoon.)
But... it was the Christian* Hour of Hate. One of our neighbors, I think on the seventh floor, had their radio on really loud, and judging by the complete lack of distortion the speakers either very near the window or pointed out the window. (Very crisp in the upper register.)
A mix of news - which was generally kind of normal news laced with random commentary (did you know that Kim Jong Il's biggest fear is the spread of Christianity, which he credits with having overthrown communism elsewhere? - huh, you could even make half a case for it in the case of Poland maybe... And really, considering Kim Jong Il this could even be true. But it really sounded like they were cheering on this Korean Christian underground of horribly persecuted people bent on overthrowing the government.) And music, followed by references to scripture if you wanted to follow up on themes in the music.
And a huge, huge amount of gloating about proposition eight, and interviewing people who talk about all these children who get in trouble because they don't have a mother and a father and how this affirms traditional marriage and the right for children to have both a mother and a father. And a lot of "Christians are rejoicing at this news"...
Oh, and two out of three presbyterian minsters support a hate crimes bill, and apparently they don't know that this bill will be used against them if they cite the biblical prohibition against homosexuality.
And they're collecting school backpacks to send to Children in rural El Salvador, and advise women to tell their verbally abusive husbands to go into counseling, and when the counselor says they've made progress join them in counseling, but meanwhile go stay with your mother. And the football star who found Jesus and saved his marriage.
It was very strange. And very loud. I don't quite know what to make of it.
* No, I am not under the impression they speak for all Christians. However, they are apparently under this impression.
