Mar. 9th, 2010 11:35 amTrained outside again. I've mostly been in the gym - we got kind of a lot of snow, and then it's been melting, but the ground has been really muddy. But some areas have dried enough to be merely the texture of well kneaded clay, and I like training outside. And it is wonderful - just over from where I'm training everything is still covered with snow, and I'm tearing up the grass a bit when I pivot... but I'm wearing the Flows, which are easy on the ground (and wonderfully intimate with the squishy mud). I put in well over and hour, and felt quite self indulgent. (Long form, cannonfist, blue dragon, green dragon, 42 sword, Chen sword. I should put in some serious dao time, too.) I've been spending a lot of time on the long form recently* working on my latest homework. When I worked through the 42 sword, I had much the same experience I'd had last fall - then, I'd been working on peng, and all the sudden the 42 was surprisingly vicious. Now it seems startlingly subtle and delicate. (It's still fairly vicious.)
And yet, for a form I have loved for many long years, it does not compare to Chen Jian. I think I feel in love with that form all over again today. There's this dynamicism there...
And there are birds, and it is green, and the mud squishes between my toes.
But I didn't run. At the gym, I've mostly been doing forms in the area in the middle of the big indoor track. I really like the surface. (And yeah, I more and more just don't care about people seeing me do forms. There's a nice little morning community, too.) So I do forms, and then run a bit at the end. Around the apartment, though, a lot of the sidewalks are still icy, and I haven't really worked out how I feel about running in the flows on cement. It's not a big barrier, but enough to keep me from playing with it in the morning when I'm on a schedule.
And, assuming this being able to breathe thing continues (which isn't a given, since it is Spring, but I'm hopeful) maybe I should look into a bit more on how to run. Anyone have any sites to recommend?
* By which I mean Laojia yilu, I'm just feeling provincial enough to refer to it thusly.
