Jul. 15th, 2010 03:41 pmThis is something I've been reflecting on for a bit. It strikes me as odd, and somewhat, perhaps, disheartening that in a very large number of stories, in a variety of media, transcendent experience is dealt with as being something close to an exclusive property of romantic relationships. I'm not attacking the idea that romantic love and transcendent experience can go together. But it bothers me that this is presented as a common expectation of romantic relationships (especially for women - one rather gets the impression that the closest a chick can get to the divine is by finding her true love) and even more that so much of the rest of the palette of human experience is more or less ignored. It rather reeks of biological determinism.
