I can be really dense at times...
Jan. 25th, 2004 03:22 pmBack around Thanksgiving I messed up something in my upper back. And it was a mess, and it tweaked my right shoulder... and onwards and so on and the whole region has been unstable ever since then. Including near constant head aches for the last couple of weeks, which I'm really good at ignoring, but have been starting to wear me down.
It just finally occurred to me that part of what might be going on is that after the original problem I stopped lifting weights because I didn't want to aggravate my shoulder further.
Now, I've said for a long time that I lift weights to stablize my upper back. This is kind of true. What I do is partly a modified set up exercises aimed at working with my upper back, that were given to me years ago, and didn't seem to do that much at the time for the part of my back ostensibly being addressed... but I took them up later because I liked what they did for my shoulders and arms (I lost a lot of general upper body strength when my back was fucked) and then I later noticed that they did seem to help my back a little.
Since no PT I've worked with recently has suggested doing something like this, it's not something I've taken that seriously. (Especially since most of them have been more worried about whether I'm overtraining.) But damn it, I *knew* they helped, and that they were important...
... and sure enough, having just worked through the whole set for the first time in at least a month, my upper back is feeling better. Doh! I need to trust myself.
