Wushu in the park today. Well, wushu and taiji both, but I do taiji in the park a lot. It's always odd practicing without the structure of the class, for timing. I'm used tot he drill of fundementals where you go a certain distance, and then have some seconds to gasp and catch your breath before the next set starts. Here, I could go across a whole field, if I didn't fall over first. I could, in theory, turn right around and do it again. It's interesting to try and develop my own pacing... (I mostly stuck to sets of eight, and then gave myself a slow count of eight between sets. Sometimes every other set.) The pollen was everywhere, and my lungs did a longer than usual freak out, but eventually calmed down. (Of course, I'd just gotten an alergy shot a couple of hours before, and the increased bloodflow to my arms means that I now have a really impressive goose egg where I got the shot. Feh.)

The grass was long and unmowed, and slightly damp, sliding underneath my shoes. The ground was uneven, though not terribly so. Fundementals just felt like work, not fun, but running through forms felt really good. Even on the unfamiliar surface, even with my feet hurting. (My walking shoes are more supportive than my MA shoes, which is great for walking but sometimes my feet really are unappreciative when I put the more varied stress on them that forms require.) No one else to keep time with, I let my body find it's own rhythm, and the power behind the movements came together more easily. After a couple of runthroughs with junior longfist, I started alternating it with the taiji competition sword form -- which was meant to be a breather, but wasn't really. A change of tempo, anyway.

A little boy, walking back from the water with his mother and sister, ran to the top of a mound of earth not far from where I was practicing, smiling with delight. After I finished the form, I turned and waved, and he ran back to his mother, though he kept throwing me smiles over his shoulder as they walked to the parking lot. No one else paid me any obvious mind.
