A pox on the female reproductive system!

My period started. It was actually late -- I'm usually clockwork woman, but I'd had pretty major mid cycle stress, so no big surprise there. But... Gah. I don't know what's with it this month. Last night I had bad cramps -- not horribly bad, but curl up in bed with a hot pack bad, and I don't usually get those. And I've been bleeding over everything. I have managed to soak every pair of panties I've worn since it started, and no end in sight. (Not standard for me at all. Luckily, there's that great martial artist trick of peroxide to get blood stains out of white uniforms, and a peroxide based bleach works just as well.) It's not obscenely heavy flow as much as more liquidy than usual, and very irregular. In the middle of stretching tonight -- which was maybe twenty minutes into the class -- I had to high tail it for the bathroom seriously afraid that I was about to start dripping noticably on the floor. This after having taken precautions right before class. Okay, my menstrual cycle interacts with my stress level in weird ways, but...

While I'm on the subject, let me make it clear that I think the whole system is a bad idea. I mean, take this birth canal idea. Okay, maybe it looked pretty good back when we were quadrapeds, and bearing litters. But look what the shift to bipedalism did to the shape of the pelvic floor, throw in single births and these godawful large heads and who exactly thought this was a good idea?!

And cryptic ovulation. I guess considering how broken everything else was maybe it was necessary. I mean, considering how messed up pregnancy is, if people could reliably tell when they were fertile too few of them would get knocked up, right? I'm really thinking the marsupials had this one figured out. Though I'd be willing to try reasonably sized eggs. (Of course, part of the point is that I'm not having children now, so can I just turn the whole system off, please?)

Then we're back to this whole menstruation bit. Hello? Did you know that the average blood iron levels for women -- the *average* is borderline anemic? You want to guess why? You wanna tell me why this is a good thing? I have yet to hear a plausible argument for evolutionary advantage, though I must believe there is one out there.

Oh, and while we're on the subject, breasts. Sensible creatures only do the engorged breasts bit when they're nursing. Notice I've never nursed? Isn't this sexual signalling bit going just a bit too far? Hey, you, yeah, you, the hunk over there! Pick me up, and I guarantee our children will be well fed! I feel like a milch cow. Ugh.
