The Nice Guy phenomenon
Mar. 21st, 2006 09:01 pmI hesitated a bit before linking to this, because it is all about various gender stereotypes and such, and models of relationships that I generally find a bit baffling at best. And yet, and yet... Hell, I might not be much of a chick, but this one rings pretty true even to me. (And the Nice Guy bit is one that arises from gender stereotypes at least as much as it is itself about gender stereotypes.)
No More Mr. Nice Guy
I think it's really worth emphasizing that this is a continuum. I only know a few dyed in the wool Nice Guys, and rather a lot more most of the time genuinely nice guys who cross that line from time to time. And yet, I can think of a few friends who have ranted to me at length about how all women date assholes instead of them to the point where they slid into a "not allowed to touch me" slot in my head. Clearly to some degree well intentioned and sincere, and yet completely unaware of how their saying nasty poisonous things about women in general made them extremely unappealing and indeed made them seem rather unsafe.

trevoke who, while being a sweet young thing (relative to me, anyway) is clearly working on being a genuinely nice guy.
