Where do pleasantries cross over the border into lying? If someone says "I miss you" do you feel obligated to respond "I miss you too", whether you do or not? I tend to be a literalist with such things, and it occurs to me that the social conventions can create an illusion of intimacy that does not in fact represent the relationship...

I think I also avoid saying such things to people unless I trust them not to respond lightly...
