Aug. 1st, 2007 01:05 pmToday is a small hyper ferret, with GI issues. I've been thinking a bit about giving them names, so I'll start now. His name is Jamie. P calls him a "crybaby", meaning that he made all kinds of noise whenever someone entered the room. (I'm pretty sure she doesn't mean this meanly. She is very gentle with the ferrets, stroking them even when they are anesthetized.) She says she hasn't seen that kind of behavior very often before, but that she had been told it was common among socialized ferrets.
Which is kind of creepy.
It's not just that, though -- though Jamie is smaller than most ferrets his age, he needs a much higher than expected for his size volume of respiration to keep his blood chemistry in line. (Always nice to run into pathways you laboriously memorized in the past in a practical setting.) We spent a lot of extra time getting him stable, relaxed and making sure he was warm enough. His skull is and odd shape, too.
As an aside, I'm seeing today ifuI tolerate nitrile gloves. Too early to say -- my hands don't feel awful, bnt they do feel peculiar. Then again, I haven't been wearing gloves for hours on end for a while.
