So now the story is that they didn't have my direct deposit information (which is a little odd, because I gave it to them, but it's not uncommon for direct deposit to be weird the first month) and so they sent me a paper check, which I have mysteriously not received, and they can put a stop order on that check and issue me another one, which will take three to five days.
I am assured by M, emeritus MD/PhD that they mess with her paycheck just as badly, so I guess this is general incompetence rather than grad student hazing. (She advises me to hunt them down in person, and has given me directions to their office.)
Really, this isn't that big a deal for me -- I can drop my FA a note, arrange for money to be wired to my checking account, and life will go on. For some reasons that makes me even more determined to make a fuss about it. Were I the more usual grad student, not getting paid for more than half a month would be a major issue. But were I a more usual grad student, I'd probably be less practiced at navigating bureaucracy.
Or maybe I'm just in an ornery mood and want to kick up a ruckus.
