I just biked to the farmer's market. Short jaunt - about 3.5 miles each way and only one even noticable hill. I got twenty pounds of wheat berries, ten pounds of rye, ramps, kale, pea sprouts (like pea vines but more delicate), blue oyster mushrooms, flax seed (I really like that I buy mostly local and organic grains and seeds), found a strong candidate for a CSA (now we have to decide if we go for the "couple" share or "family of four" share - we eat enough veggies for the family of four, but it might make sense to get the couple, and then buy extras of the things we like best - one pound of broccoli a week just isn't going to cut it), a local source of duck eggs (yes! one less thing to buy at whole foods) and some smoked salmon. (They got me at a weak moment.) Oh, and an organic fair trade cotton shirt, and found someone who will make me a linen dress jacket for around $70. (What she had fit great in the shoulders and the chest, but the arms were too short and the hips too large. Beautiful line, though. And nice work - I'd be expecting to pay three times that much. Darn.)

(I usually don't go to the non veggie side of the market, but the guy who knew how much my grain order cost was having coffee, so I wandered a bit waiting for him.)

That felt so good. Great day for it. (I'm kind of kicking myself for taking this long to get the bike out.) I got stopped a few times on the street by people with questions about the recumbent... and many more times at the market by people who wanted to know about my panniers. Um... they're plain bright yellow Ortliebs. I said "They're bulletproof," to one of my favourite farmers. "They are?" he asked, clearly surprised. "Um, I mean they're really sturdy and don't leak, not even a little, not even if they fall off your bike and into a body of water." (Just guess how I know this.)

Oh, and the person with the CSA would like me to write recipes for her. Yeah, there are those days when I spend ten minutes at the market and zip back. This wasn't one of those days...
