Today the farmer's market was full of squash, brocolli and beets. And all the summer stuff, but it is feeling like fall.

Right now there is a big pot of borscht simmering on the stove. Just cutting up the beets if evocative for me. (So I waved a cut beet under [livejournal.com profile] stolen_tea's nose - he didn't seem to get it.) Borscht is major comfort food, as well as particularly major it's fall and time to move indoors and focus on stuff and eat soup food. But it's not something I ate growing up - in fact, thinking about it, very few things consider comfort food now are things I ate growing up. (Pot pies are an exception.)

What counts as comfort food for you? And what is its history?
