tylik: (MushroomCap)

This requires some background explanation. I like hats. It is, however, difficult for me to find hats that fit properly and the serve the purposes I would like to ask of them. Which mostly involve having enough of a brim to keep the rain off my glasses, and being hair compatible*, mostly meaning that they can either keep my hair out of my face or, even better, can be worn over a pony tail.

I'd decided some years ago that the some of the best kinds of hats for me were little cap with brim things - newsboys, maybe? Anyhow, so I got a natural linen one from haterdashery quite a few years ago, which was my faithful hiking and mushrooming companion (caps are good for holding chance-found mushrooms) for a good many years.

And then I lost it, possibly in the move to the barge.

Somewhere in there I also acquired first one, and then another lovely irish tweed caps. And lost them both. They were gifts, too.

Anyhow, so I got another natural linen cap made by hatterdashery (the one in the icon)... and in the move out to Cleveland I lost it.

Clearly I am not to be trusted with nice things...

Last winter, I found a nice wool hat with ear flaps. I tried to find its original owner, but failed. Apparently there is an inverse relationship between how much I spend on a hat and how long before I loose it. I still have that hat.

But I bought a really cute little grey cotton cap when I was in Seattle last summer, and lost that before I made it home. I then went to the company website, found that the hat I'd bought was discontinued and on sale... and bought two, one grey, one brown. And lost them both. And I bought a green hat with earflaps and matching fingerless gloves, and lost them, too.

And then I found my brown cap, which I'd apparently dropped on the ground after getting out of the car when I got back from having the epidural injection.

And then I found my green hat and gloves (which I'd stuffed in my bike bags when it had gotten sunny when I was out riding one day).

And then when I was in Seattle, I bought a really great hat. It is cute**, it is warm and fuzzy, it has hidden earflaps, and a brim which is designed to fold in half for smaller packing, and is in all ways the perfect winter hat for me. Of course, I lost it a couple of days later. (In my defense, I missed it when we were leaving the table, but I looked around and couldn't find it, and I was in a sushi-coma, anyway. Darn but that was an excellent meal.)

But after a lot of calling around, it turned out to be right where I'd first missed it, at Nishino's, and I got my hat back.

So today after an exam I grabbed my aforementioned favorite hat and gloves (being the Mechanix gloves that are equally not cute by most definitions, but adored by me... and they match the hat) and headed to my next class. When I left that class, I noticed that I didn't see my hat and gloves, but figured I'd stuffed them in my backpack. So it wasn't until later that I realized they were not in my backpack, and that in fact I had probably left my hat and gloves in the bathroom four hours before.

As so as I had my slug in the freezer, I ran down... and they were right where I'd left them.

I wonder if it's safe to get another linen cap from hatterdashery?

* I keep thinking about getting rid of the hair, which will open some frontiers wrt hats. Though it might make hats even more important. I have the trimmers - which were bought for my legs, but would work just fine on my head. But I keep reminding myself that as much as I like having short or no hair, I really hate growing it out, too. Still, it's been a while since I've hacked it off.

** I do actually want my hats to be cute. For certain values of cute. This one is cute... well, okay, it looks like something from revolutionary China, and is grey and unornamented, but it's cute on me. Really. I keep hoping someone will see me in it and call me "tongzhi". I'm not sure if it's better if they get the joke or not.
