This morning, I got a call from the branch managers of a Washington Mutual branch in Portland, Oregon, asking me if I were missing an ATM card. This seemed pretty weird, because I wasn't. I figured it was something to do with my wallet having been stolen two weeks ago, though those cards were eventually returned. He said, "well, I have this card here with your name on it..."

"Hmmm... well let me check, but I'm pretty sure my cards are right... oh dear."

Because sure enough, the debit card to my personal checking account wasn't where I always leave it.

Now, I used it to pay for dinner at a cheap (but tasty!) little mexican dive on Broadway last night. Hadn't used it since, though my purse was unattended at the side of the classroom during Bagua. (Though I don't think so! And even if I did, there were only two women in about the right age range... and I know them both!) So I probably lost it in the restaurant, though it seems weird, too -- I paid at the register, with my wallet in hand. Only thing I can think of is that I asked our server if she could fill our water bottles, and maybe somehow it got dropped in that set of exchanges. (She remembered us, I just talked to her.)

Anyhow, the guy at the Portland WaMu works in a branch that's in a Fred Meyer's. Someone went in there and tried to buy a bunch of jewelry, struck the people behind the counter as suspicious, so they questioned her and asked for ID, and she freaked and ran.

I called the main customer service number, and while no charges have hit my account there was a pending $270 charge in the system (from the Tukwila Bon Marche) and three gas station stops along the way to Portland. Then I called the Bon, and talked to their loss prevention department (mentioning that it's clear no one was checking ID -- sheesh, if the guy in the Portland Fred Meyer's thought she looked suspicious...) and they think they have the transaction recorded on videotape, so they're checking to see if this is indeed the case.

Then I called the police.

But you know what? The charges will be no problem, I'll just have to file the dispute form. I have a checkbook for the account, and my joint account card is fine... But chances are extremely slim that the person who did this is going to be caught. Having the face on video is fine and good, but probably won't help much in the long run.
