French Creek
Sep. 15th, 2002 03:00 pmCraig and I headed up to French Creek yesterday -- which was, as advertised, a couple of miles north of stanwood. Too bad they left out the 30 odd miles east of Stanwood part... but all was fine except we got to Stanwood late, the bakery closed, and Craig missed his creme brulee and is very sad.
Not a very serious hike. Nothing about it inherently to make it non serious (it's not a technically challenging hike, except for some of the side paths) but it's plenty nice enough. But it's early fall and everything is fruiting and I couldn't go a quarter mile without having to ID something, or try to remember if that was a plant I wanted to harvest the leaves or roots of. Mostly brought back wild ginger and bunchberry, kicking myself for not harvesting western coltsfoot. Not that it's hard to find... Have to got after some monday or tuesday, plus a ton of vanilla leaf, some black cohosh, licorice fern... Might even make up some more jewelweed balm. Have plenty for the house, but I keep giving away jars of it, and I'm almost out of those. Oh, and devil's club root. Going to have to find the right place for that...
A nice day, anyway. Kind of regretting not going up to Anacortes for Greek food... Not that there is anything to regret at Cedar's, but those bottomless cups of chai are my undoing, and I was up half the night.
Feeling kind of weird about the idea of going back to school. Though if I play my cards right, I think I could do a quadruple major in just over a year. (Which would be amusing. Not sure if that's a good enough reason. I'm seriously considering seeing if I can pick up the linguistics degree, and I'm at least going to talk to the Jackson School people. That would be a lot of time commitment, though.)
