[livejournal.com profile] thewronghands have you read Meditations on Violence? Because if you haven't, I think you might enjoy it. (Seattle folks - well, the ones I actively train with - I'm arranging for a copy to arrive, which should be circulated around the group. Or someone doesn't get any catnip.) It's really very good. And a surprisingly non-icky read even for my pacifist* self. Not many people can write that well about real violence without being assholes. This is a pretty general recommendation.

(If you're not interested in Chan you can safely ignore this part.) I've also been working way through** some of Sheng Yen's books. Shattering the Great Doubt in particular knocked my socks off (that probably has something to do with where I was.) Seriously, the last time something got my attention this much I... well, I ended up joining the order that produced the book, actually. A happy accident.

Also? Cleveland sometimes manages some righteous thunderstorms.

* It's complicated.
** I take a deliberately slow pace with this sort of thing. They are not improved by being read in one sitting, at least for me. I think this is one of the reason why I often prefer to read philosophical texts in the original - gives me a good excuse to slow down and really chew them over.
