Does anyone have resources they'd recommend on evaluating the environmental trade offs between leather and synthetic shoe materials?
Keep in mind that I will approach this as a scholar. Yes, I am vegetarian (mostly vegan, though it's involved). Yes, I also am engaged in animal experimentation. Sources that rant against leather because of the cruelty of the meat industry and nasty smell of the tanneries aren't going to particularly impress me. Likewise, assertions that leather is good because it's natural and synthetics are made of evil, evil petroleum also aren't going to win me over. Quantitative data, especially quantitative data that breaks out data from ecologically friendly tanning techniques compared to environmentally friendly synthetic fabrication (best vs. best) is really preferred.
I'm having trouble finding the kind of information I want in the scientific press (I still have a lot of articles to glance over) and the popular press is leaving me wanting to stick pencils in my eyes.
Oh, hey, thunder...
