Today was the first pick up day for our CSA (we found an organic CSA!). It is warm and muggy, and thunderstorms, damaging wind and large hail are forecast* so after running and forms I grabbed my bike and headed up.
The pick-up site is really close. A mile? A mile and a half? I was far from the only person on a bike. While this was not openly discussed, there were several unspoken conversations. (*You're cool.* *You too.* *And those are excellent panniers!* - everyone loves the Ortliebs, and they're apparently a lot less common out here.)
Normally our CSA will be all produce, but a few things didn't ripen in time, so they decided to throw in some vegan whole wheat bread**, some peach jelly, and some eggs. They also have a swap box, and quite a number of people were turning down the eggs... though for every one of those another family happily took extras. I usually don't do hen eggs, but I decided this fit well with my criteria for when I'll make exceptions.
The rest of the haul:
One beefsteak tomato (mine)
One box strawberries (also mine - how easily I forget how much more varied my diet is than Kendrick's)
1 large zucchini (Kendrick's, though had I not already been getting so much cool stuff we'd have split it)
1 big bunch kale (Kendrick's, because I still have kale - it's gorgeous, though)
2 heads lettuce (Kendrick's, this time)
1 bunch garlic scapes (split)
Then I stopped by the farmer's market, where I picked up black walnuts, tatsoi (why I was so willing to give Kendrick the rest of the greens), fresh pasta, and a breakfast burrito. And asked about where to get ladybugs, and got to brag about my eggplants.
And then I came home and had open faced sandwiches with hummus and tomato. Meanwhile, I have tomatoes thinking of ripening.
Hey, *still* no punishing winds. Or large hail. Or lightening! Folks, get with it!
* Kendrick, on hearing this, had to pull up the weather satellite page. (Well, hey, I do it a few times a day too.) And then write a python script to pull it every ten minutes and set it as his wallpaper. And then (at my half-humorous suggestion) write another script to remap the colors so that it wouldn't be so bright and busy. It's absolutely gorgeous, but I decided that really, I should do it myself. And then the first version of the NOAA satellite map I pulled up has just the right colors anyway... I feel kind of cheated, honestly.
** K was all "it's a lot more white than I'm used to". How easily one forgets that most people when they say "whole wheat" don't mean "grind up some wheat berries and throw them in a bowl..." (or "sprout a bunch of wheat berries, then...") We have most of a loaf of sprouted grain bread I made earlier this week, though.
