One of my surgical assisants just ran her first race last weekend. I mentioned that I was hoping to get up to doing some race running, and mentioned the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, a 5/1 mile race, complete with costume contest... and then my other surgical assistant said she's hoping to be up for a race by Thanksgiving, so...!

(We should rope in Kendrick! Oh, and J - our extremely good runner labmate who broke his hip six or seven weeks ago - he should be up for something small and silly by then! - though he's probably doing family Thanksgiving stuff. And we should all wear costumes!

I will post more about this if it looks like it's likely to happen. It's early times yet.)

I still haven't run since the achilles tendonitis got bad. But it's finally getting better. I'm thinking, if I feel really good, I might do a very short run tomorrow - just enough to see how they're doing. But only if I feel really good - the hard bulging bit on my left heel hasn't gone away (I think it's starting to shrink, though) so I know I'm not in the clear yet. I'm still biking back and forth to the lab - this is mostly because one of the things I did the week before last is finally make friends with low gear. (Yeah, I know. Hey, it's a 21 speed. I just never figured I really needed more than the top 7-10.*) And then I made friends with the hill. Now my major problem is that it's over too quickly... Otherwise The tendons are pretty decent**, though both of my ankles are still being a little strange overall.

Another of the gifts of today was a result of my period starting. (Though this schedule... it used to be I was never menstruating on Tuesdays, which is when I have yoga. Now it's pretty much every month. Foo. Not that class with Karen is ever sedate, even doing menstrual poses.) So, mild cramps, and that slight difference in alignment. Not a big thing, but with the forms work I'm doing, and the focus on moving from the center*** it was an interesting form of altered attention.

Mostly I'm just pretty excited about the work I've been doing. I'm all "Is Shifu even going to notice?!" too, of course. (I'd be pretty surprised if she doesn't, though. Especially thinking of other trips back, like when I walked in the door, and she was all "Oh, I can tell you've been practicing a lot!" and started commenting on what I'd been working on, and what we were going to work on. Seriously. Before I'd done more than put on my indoor shoes.)

* Then again, it's also a recumbent, and I'm not wearing anything that attached my feet to the pedals, so hills are more challenging than on an upright... Okay, so this was really stupid.
** Of course, as I write this, I'm can't help but notice that the tendon attachement point where the bulgy bit is is kind of aching. Perhaps from neglect. Yeah. It needs some running.
*** Why yes, I have been working on that for as long as I've been working on Chen. Someday, finally, I will really, really be done with it - and then you can bury me.
