Ooo... sore this morning. First time I've felt like this after wushu in a while. Wushu was really grueling yesterday -- we worked on sweeps just over and over, and at times I just wanted to curl up and whimper. (Not even primarily a physical reaction -- sweeps frustrate me, and while I was getting a little sore, I was mostly demoralized.) Usually we work through all the fundementals (mostly kicks) first, and I like kicks and am fairly good at them, so by the time we get to sweeps I'm really stretched out and in a good mood. This time once we'd warmed up and done combinations, we dove right into sweeps.
Oh, and speaking of warming up, that was part of the problem -- we got there early to help set up, but no one was there who could open the building, and Shifu was late. So we all stood out in the cold, which made the first part of class even more fun. We'd *wanted* to stretch...
Despite my occaisional despair over them, my sweeps are getting better. (Part of the problem is that I was wearing the wrestling shoes, which really suck for this purpose. I really should look into strategic application of duck tape so I slide better...) Mind you, having Shifu shout "go lower! go lower!" increased my general distress. Of course, she then stopped, looked and me and said "it's good you can go all the way down". I can now reliably get half way around with the wrestling shoes on (though there was one point where the shoe stuck badly, I twisted up into a preztle and then fell over. It was kind of amazing -- my one foot didn't move, and my whole body spun around it. The amazing part is that it didn't really hurt.) I might be able to do a passable full sweep in the felt slippers... We'll see.
She came over and talked to me during the first part of bagua, and told me my sweeps were getting better (which did make me feel a lot better) and asked how my knees and ankles were doing. (And they're getting better too, though my ankles still have a ways to go. If I'd done this much a couple of months ago, I would have done myself injury.) That conversation is probably much of why I didn't end up being depressed about that class. (And it's the first time in a while that I've started to get depressed about wushu like that, though for the first half of last quarter it was more often than not. There have been a lot of times when I felt like I was just always going to suck at this stuff, and that I wasn't making much progress.)
Bagua was fun. I wish I wasn't usually tired for bagua, though.
And this morning my back hurts. Mostly my lower back. I think it's because all the work on my ankles means my stance is changing. All the sweeps might have something to do with it too.
