The good news is that I'm getting a lot more flexibility in my left ankle. Empty stance is no longer painful (this is wushu empty stance, which is the only version that was painful). I can drop into crouch stance pretty easily and without eating up my knees.

Darn the thing is sore, though! Went to see my chiropractor (the current person in charge of working my ankles loose) this morning because it was twinging badly with every step. He loosened it up very well, but if anything it hurt worse. (However, it was more stable and didn't feel like I was damaging it.) Made it through almost all of wushu, though I took frequent breaks during bagua.
