We've had a pretty abrupt fall, shifting from a hot dry summer to cool, wet weather. Fall is one of my favorite seasons - I think there is a bit of melancholy with the passing of summer, but it translates into me being energetic and feeling creative, if very aware of the passing of things. (I'm not partcularly against the passing of things, but boy is it an aid in remembering to get things done.)

The frequency of discussions of weather is way up. I mean, yeah, kind of the generic safe conversation, but I think a lot of us really care. There's this odd mix of hope and dread either way. Last winter was really mild. Eerily mild. The kind of winter that provokes a mix of "I would love it to be like this every year!" and "This simply is not right." Though with a single occurance, rather slanted to the former.

It was my first winter in the zendo, and that distinction is important because we're much further from campus than before. I can walk, but it's at least 40 minutes, and longer in bad conditions. Last winter I was able to bike all but one day - and I probably could have pulled it off that day, but I got to my bike late to discover a flat and, the streets were covered with fluffy snow and irritable drivers and I could stream NPR through my phone. Yeah.

So there is dread at the thought of an approaching winter, which I'm noticing in myself more than previous years. And some mild glee that the first (rather preliminary) forecast out calls for it to be a mild one. Practically speaking, another light winter would be pretty great. But it would not be right. Hm. Most of Ohio has been re-zoned zone 6 from zone 5. Convenient, though my new banana tree and pomegranate are still living in doors through the darker half of the year.

(I'm not exactly anti-climate change, I am wary of climate change. On a personal basis, I mostly find it interesting. I like weather. Changes in weather are neat. Changes in weather are also pretty likely to screw over much of the population of this world. On a personal basis, if there is snow, I will deal with it, and probably enjoy it more often than not.)
