tylik: (Slug'n'Snail)

Cleveland is doing the Cleveland winter thing - at least a little. So, a bit of snow, currently kind of hanging on the edge of sticking. Lots of slightly below freezing at night, slight above during the day temperatures. It's the first real snow of the season (if this counts). I'm still hoping for another winter as mild as last one, except for the part about it being sick and wrong and global climate change. (Why didn't I buy up that farmland in British Columbia?) This might make for a fun trip to the farmers' market tomorrow - but I have the last order of veggies to pick up before heading out of town. Also, I really need to get over to the glass place to pick up the latest set of pieces.

I'm glad I mostly had random things scheduled for today, as I'm kind of wasted after the grading rush. The only thing I really did in the lab today is set up the refugium in Sabrina's tank and move half of the gracilaria there. (Gracilaria pacifica has thinner strands than the last couple of kinds I've gotten, which means that 2 pounds takes up more space. And two pounds is kind of a lot anyway.) It's my old refugium divider, and a new light that may or may not be working out. For that matter, I'm not yet completely certain the gracilaria is doing well - but it's doing much better than the last several we've had, and I suspect it's fine. (I mean really, if it can survive in the pacific? Probably fine.) And the slugs think it's great. I should know before I leave if it's really adapting to our tanks well.

If it all goes well, I'll build out one for Kendrick's tank when I get back, and then make a decision about whether to bother with Jeff's tank, which is a different design. (Also, if I'm going to maintain all the refugia, I want off of regular slug duty. This is getting kind of nuts.) But we can start stocking up on more slugs and keeping them longer if the gracilaria holds up. And have them a lot healthier in the meantime.

Meanwhile, since we're kind of overstocked at the moment, I keep releasing poofs of gracilaria into the other tanks, and watching the slugs brawl over them. The snails also approve, which means I'll probably have to move the turbo snails back out of the refugia.
