Yesterday I spent much of the afternoon cleaning stuff around the house in Woodinville. (This was nice on a number of levels, including that it gave me a chance to reconnect with the place in a way that worked.) One of the things I did was clean table linens. I guess we must kind of have a lot of table linens. Anyhow, in that process I found some of the napkins I'd made back when we were living in the apartment in Fremont.

When I first moved out to the barge, I wasn't much in a spending mood, so even though I really wanted a set of cloth napkins I bought myself two dishtowels and pretty much called it good. (I like cloth napkins, and they're environmentally preferable. Though I really, really like dishtowels, in a way that is a little strange even to me.) But there was a stack of eight crimson napkins I'd made to match a particular table cloth, and below them eight mossy green cotton linen napkins I'd made because I liked the fabric, with their carefully pulled fringes and handsewn corners. (To think, I was once a person who did such things. Though come to think of it, it's cheaper to go that route, and satisfying work if you have time to do it at all.) It's kind of like getting a present from myself.

I slept a lot last night. It's so strange to be able to sleep easily enough that if I short myself a few nights running I can just sleep in when I have time to.

I've been meaning to make baba ganouj, on the theory that that would almost certainly run it out and I could shift over to the full one. But instead, for the first time since I've been here, I ran out of propane while I was taking my morning shower. Actually, it wasn't that bad. I noticed that the temperature was dropping, so I used the last of the heat to wash the shampoo out of my hair. I guess it was worth doing just so I know it's not that awful. (I had visions of changing the tank, in the rain, wrapped in my bathrobe with a head covered in suds...)
